Advances in treatments, ageing populations, global epidemics, increased patient expectations and limited resources are just a few of the many factors that have come to influence health services across the World. In order to provide and deliver appropriate medical care, effective planning and management of health services is essential. The provision and successful utilisation of objective decision-making tools is a challenging yet vital task, and tools drawn from Operational Research (OR) are being increasingly sought and adopted within the profession.
This talk will provide an overview of different OR modelling approaches applied to healthcare systems. A range of modelling methodologies and applications will be shown, based on the experiences of working with a variety of different healthcare organisations, with a view to demonstrating the varied contribution that OR modelling can make in supporting healthcare policy making. In particular, we will present some recent work proposing the use of a relatively modern time series technique, Singular Spectrum Analysis, to improve existing algorithms that give required staffing levels in an emergency unit.
